The Tennessee Government Management Institute (TGMI) addresses the duality of being a middle manager. They are accountable to senior executives on initiatives and are also assigned staff. They are responsible for helping front-line staff see their employer’s vision and perform tasks accordingly. Since 2000, TGMI has helped develop the skills and abilities of these leaders.
TGMI is a two-week management institute that provides mid-level managers in Tennessee state government the opportunity for academic study, acquiring practical management skills, and cross-agency networking to enhance the individual skills of middle managers.
Graduates leave this program with new tools of the trade, the acquaintance of new colleagues and an abundance of genuine friends. TGMI alumni become integral to the state government plans for retention and succession, and they often return to attend the Tennessee Government Executive Institute.

The Tennessee Department of Human Resources chooses up to 65 applicants to participate. Participants must apply and be accepted to the TGMI program after being notified by their state agency.
